Furniture Product Designer - Full Time
Clive Christian Interiors is seeking a Product Development Engineer to join their passionate and dynamic team as the luxury British brand enters an exciting stage of growth and development.
Clive Christian Interiors is seeking an enthusiastic, practical, driven individual with a clear focus on attention to detail. The role is based in the company’s workshop in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The successful candidate will be responsible for taking products from conceptual design to market release, driving product improvement and implementing processes to further enhance operational efficiency. The successful candidate must obtain the ability of taking ideas from concept to manufacture in a structured, methodical and quality focussed manner.
Main Role Responsibilities
Hands-on/real world design and development of innovative new products and conceptual designs
Maintenance of the Company’s portfolio of new and existing products and collections including additions, modifications and removals
Ensure conceptual design expectations are satisfied whilst being translated into practical solutions for sale
Design for manufacture and assembly
Lead the completion of ‘complete ranges’, taking conceptual/physical appearance designs and developing full ranges including all product variants, cabinetry internals, technology and hardware solutions
Design, implementation and ownership of NPI processes
Implement stage gates/approval processes for all relevant stakeholders
Use project management tools to ensure key deadlines and milestones are met, in order that the Company can maintain and increase its rate of NPI
Assist the Head of Design with conceptual design projects and manufacturing support
Take a lead in improving overall product quality, performance and functionality
Provide guidance and technical support to our internal teams and customers
Work with customers (showrooms) and installers to further improve the customer experience of working with Clive Christian
Assist in definition of manufacturing methods, facilities and equipment
Assist in initial sourcing of raw materials and components/hardware and subsequent handover to Purchasing
Drive and participate in problem definition and resolution using standard tools (such as root cause analysis, FMEA etc…) and support corrective and preventive actions
Converting design sketches and 2D models into 3D practical working drawings
Converting ‘specials’ to standard where appropriate to increase efficiency of downstream processes and provide timely/cost efficient service to customers
Generate and review component/product/collection documentation to facilitate drawing office and manufacturing transfer and sales/installation support
Troubleshooting product and component problems within the technical and manufacturing areas
Oversee pilot and prototype production to ensure yields, costs, manufacturing etc… fall within conceptual/company design requirements
Liaise with Finance to ensure component/product costs are established
Liaise with IT to ensure components and products are properly implemented into internal systems
Skills & Expertise
Ideally experienced in furniture manufacture, or at the minimum an industrial background of multi-component products
Demonstrably experienced in transfer from design into manufacturing
A self-starter who can design and manage processes to drive improvement across the whole operational business and become a key stakeholder in the successful implementation of said processes.
Engineering degree or equivalent industrial experience
Understanding multiple manufacturing and assembly processes and techniques in high-value, high quality industry
Project management and product improvement techniques, including FMEA, DFM, continuous improvement tools
Structured approach to project time management and scheduling
Experience of designing and implementing NPI tools
Excellent documentation creation skills
Effective verbal and visual communicator, through a variety of mediums including sketching, design and visualisation packages including Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop etc…
Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD, using AUTOCAD and ideally Inventor
